Exhibition of the fresco "The Armed Pilgrimage of Godfrey of Bouillon".

The artist Marie-Laure Alff is known in the region mainly for her oil paintings in predominantly blue tones of landscapes of the Ardennes inhabited by creatures of legend.

For this exhibition, she has taken an interest in a character who has been legendary throughout the centuries: Godefrey of Bouillon.

Marie-Laure, who is very passionate about the Middle Ages, has studied many works dedicated to the life of the Duke of Lower Lorraine. She has also studied the texts of various chroniclers such as : Albert d'
Aix, Guillaume de Tyr, Robert Le Moine... to imagine the atmosphere of the period.

She has chosen thirteen emblematic, legendary scenes from the life of Godefrey of Bouillon and painted them on natural silk. Painted like the anonymous painters who enriched the medieval manuscripts with their creations. She chose the silk-setting technique*, because it is based mainly on the drawing and thus gives a good reproduction of the colours in a light-hearted way.

The mural is 15 metres long and is entitled "The Armed Pilgrimage of Godefroid de Bouillon". It is on display in the Bouillon Castle, at the entrance to the Scriptura Museum.

This exhibition is accompanied by explanatory panels and two books that deal with the history of the crusade on the one hand and the painting technique used to create this mural on silk on the other.

Remark :
The visit to the temporary exhibition "The Armed Pilgrimage of Godefrey of Bouillon" is included in the entrance ticket to the castle.
